about

what do you think a typical morning in cambodia sounds like? well, i'm glad you asked. not much of what you are used to from a western urban environment will indeed apply here: the most remarkable feature is the neighbourhood itself. each and every member of the community will on one or several occasions during the day add their bit to the never ending soundtrack of life. life is being lived outdoors in this part of the world and this inevitably means that joys and sorrows, laughter and rows will feature in it as much as everyday sounds of household items and having a shower. but this is not all. alongside the human population a wealth of different animal species is accompanying the neighbourhood. domesticated and feral and anything in-between. add the screeching noise of one or more sound systems blasting different messages into the airwaves as well as the occasional motorcycle and you have a vague idea of the noise levels around here. you might wonder now how all this could form into a pleasant soundtrack. well, plain and simply: life is beautiful with all its highs and lows. and so are the sounds when you are able to hear them. preferably on top of each other.

this sound clip has been recorded on 19.11.2017 at 6am in siem reap, cambodia. this is the time of the year when the rainy season finally goes into retreat to make way for the "cambodian winter" - an entirely dry period with strong and cool winds sweeping through the landscapes.
here, of one of the last storms of that year with strong gusts of wind and heavy thunder is trying to defy the seasons whilst in the background a local wedding ceremony is unfazedly in full swing with the cockerels of the neighbourhood crowing their morning calls as usual.
